The U S Department of Agriculture announced controversial changes to skip-row planting rules for the 1966 cotton crop, drawing fire from Congress member George Mahon who says the agency ignored congressional wishes. Page 3.
NASA announced it will not use the Gemini 6 booster to launch Gemini 7, opting instead to employ the Gemini 7 rocket for its early 1966 rendezvous mission. The Titan 2 booster that failed during the Agena rendezvous will be stored, and the Gemini 7 flight target remains aimed for December 8.
The Federal Communications Commission directs an investigation into AT&T telephone and related rates after reviewing the company costs and earnings report. AT&T chairman Frederick R. Kappel calls the FCC action unwarranted and says the public will pay the price.
Henry Smith 58, a long time Edgewood farmer, works as chief of a garbage crew earning about $25,000 yearly. He has received monthly checks around $2,000 from a gas and sulphur mine near Dallas. Smith says he likes the job and plans to keep farming when he retires. He bought several vehicles with the money and notes he resembles President Johnson has been remarked for years. In Houston, U.S. Rep. Albert Thomas undergoes a routine hospital checkup.
House Un American Activities investigators questioned Furman D. Williams who headed a South Carolina Klavern unit called the underground. Williams refused to answer if members were trained in rifles explosives or violence. Prosecutors hinted the unit might be linked to the United Klans of America’s Cherokee Sportsman’s Club in Gaffney.
After Williams was dismissed the committee planned further questioning on the underground topic. Chair Edwin E Willis warned the issue remains open as Imperial Wizard Robert Shelton and other Klan leaders are slated to return for continued testimony.
Ester Pennsylvania report notes two pupils Charles Steward Jr and Peggy Steward suspended for three days for bringing their own lunches instead of buying 35 cent cafeteria meals. School Board president Robert F Russell cites new policy requiring meal options including bringing lunch. The district cafeterias rely on federal subsidies about six cents per meal and aim to include all students in the program. See SCHOOL FOOD Page 18.
Viet Cong guerrillas launched concurrent attacks on three U S air bases near Da Nang and Chu Lai. They destroyed 19 helicopters and two Skyhawk jets and damaged 27 aircraft. Marines repelled two assaults while a five man squad carrying explosives penetrated Chu Lai defenses.
In Indianapolis a 37 year old mother and a 15 year old neighbor boy were held without bond on preliminary murder charges in the torture death of 16 year old Sylvia Marie Likens. Richard Hobbs gave an oral statement describing a week of abuse and the sister Jennie Likens corroborated the tale. Autopsy found death from a fractured skull after the girl was bound gagged dumped in a basement and subjected to repeated beatings and foul material in her mouth. Police offered no motive for the tortures.
Government experts say higher meals reflect the long chain from farmer to processor to shipper to grocer, with the old supply and demand law driving prices. Meat remains high in major cities though some items, like certain produce, are cheaper. a rib end pork roast jumped from 24 to 57 cents per pound while a brand of catsup stayed at 23 cents for 14 ounces.
