October 18 1944 report notes the War Chest fund drive open with goal of 50 505 dollars and progress under half by noon Tuesday. Tulsa Hurricane football visits Tech Saturday as underdog. other local news includes births, medical association events, Thanksgiving dates, and civic notes in Lubbock and surrounding area.
The First Baptist Gleaners luncheon at the activities center featured a Halloween motif with hostesses Mesdames Yancy Ingram Johnson and Butler. Dr C E Hereford and Mrs Tom Tarwater led tasks, while Mrs M L Shepherd presided. Bethenian class installed by Mrs G R Kennedy and Mrs J A Jones at 2403 Thirtieth with L A Ellis presiding. Mary Ware sang as a guest, corgages given to Mrs Kennedy and Mrs Ashford presented a class gift to Printess Wilson for six years service as secretary.
Mrs George Hunter hosted the Monroe Home Demonstration club meeting with thirteen members present. Recreation was led by Mrs A T Biggers and the program topic Housework by the Clock featured talks by several members. The group voted to work at Red Cross rooms monthly and Miss Clara Pratt county agent will meet them Oct 24 at Mrs Justice's home.
Six children were present Thursday morning at the Well Baby clinic held at the Community Center sponsored by Lubbock Junior Welfare League. Dr. Pauline Miller attended. League workers included Sara Daviss, Weston Pettey, Etoile McLeod, Martha Kuykendall, Archie Scott, and Bill Coker. Graduate diplomas were presented to Alvis Ray Rogers and Ronald Hunt.
The annual session opened with a luncheon at Monterrey cafe followed by a school of instructions at Knights of Pythias hall led by Mrs. Elmo Smith. Grand chief Mrs. Ola Muckleroy presided at the question box and 21 candidates were initiated at 8 p.m. with 27 Lubbock members and visitors from Tahoka Wilson and Lamesa.
Texas Adjutant General Arthur B. Knickerbocker invited members of the Texas congressional delegation to a universal military training conference in Austin on October 25. Gov. Coke R. Stevenson and Henry Love of the Texas American Legion urged the session, to shape Texas stance on postwar military establishment and proposed universal training legislation.

Today's events include AAUW at 2 30 p m in the Tech Home Economics tea room and the Lubbock Music Club at 3 p m with Mrs G N Atkinson hosting at 22301 Fourteenth Street.
Washington reports Col. Robert Cutler, coordinator for soldier voting, explained to Rep. Norman that 33 envelopes from Grays Harbor Washington did not have their outer or inner seals opened. He said outer covers were likely stamped before noting they held absentee ballots, which were then passed to the election board intact. Norman aides found the explanation satisfactory.
Garfield Crawford a Dallas public relations man subpoenaed to testify before the Senate committee investigating W. Lee O'Daniel said he would obey the subpoena though it was unsigned. The Green led committee will begin hearings Wednesday in Washington.
Preston E. Smith, owner of Tech theater and state representative elect, bought a two story building at Fourteenth and Texas for 51500 from John Dalrymple and R. D. Moxley. He plans a 700 to 800 seat theater with space for small businesses and expects remodeling to begin soon.
The census bureau reports cottonseed crushed from Aug 1 to Sept 30 reached 453,958 tons, down from 637,572 tons a year earlier. On hand at mills as of Sept 30 stood at 735,174 tons, versus 1,008,155 tons a year ago.
Sailors adrift and covered with fuel oil are being helped by a new soap designed to clean men burned or injured. The product claims rapid removal of oil and improved skin condition after exposure.
George Gallup reports Roosevelt gaining in six southern states since September while Dewey edges one state. Oklahoma shows a tight 51 to 49 split for Roosevelt, Kentucky 55 to 45, and other Southern states display sizable Roosevelt margins. The 13 states provide 148 electoral votes with varied shifts. Dr. Mallory Bascom Culpepper 75 died Friday morning at St Marys Hospital after a 25 year career as Carlsbad New Mexico physician. His body was sent Friday to Carlsbad for burial and funeral services likely Sunday. Survivors include his wife four sons Dr Dick Culpepper Wayles Culpepper Charlie Culpepper Bass Culpepper one daughter Mrs J D Merchant and eight grandchildren.
In Albuquerque on October 13 78 men will be initiated into the Shriners during the annual convention.
Allied officials disclosed Maj Richard I Bong of Poplar Wisconsin bagged two enemy planes during Tuesday's raid on Balikpapan Borneo bringing his score to 30. He previously returned to the Southwest Pacific after a recent absence.
U P Co A V Rinearson, commandant at Fort Crockett for nearly two years, departed for an undisclosed assignment. Lt Col Norton B Wilson succeeded him and will command the western gulf sub sector and Galveston harbor defenses.
