Algerian Fighting Erupts as Berbers Clash With Army

Rebel Berbers led by Hocine Aït Ahmed clashed with Algerian forces near Fort National and Michelet in Kabylie. Heavy fighting followed a withdrawal by Berber units and reports spoke of high casualties. The government expelled AP correspondent Andrew Borowiec and UPI manager Alain Raymond.

Two Freed Men Return From Spy Swap Today

Two Americans freed in a West East spy exchange were flown from Moscow to New York via London and Idlewild. Rev Walter Ciszek, priest, and scholar Marcin Makinen, aged 24, were released after years in Soviet detention.
