Diplomat Held In 4 Million Narcotics Plot Smuggler
The Guatemalan ambassador to Belgium Mauricio Rosal and three others were arrested in New York on charges of smuggling 160 pounds of heroin valued at about 4 million dollars. U.S. Attorney Gillespie said the seizure was the largest narcotics haul in the country and implicated a scheme spanning more than 10 trips. Rosal, 58, reportedly acted as courier and used his diplomatic passport though he had no U.S. immunity. The arrests followed agents closing in as Rosal and Etienne Tardit met in Manhattan with a French purser and a Brooklyn longshoreman.

Auto Crash Kills Woman. Husband Injured Near Here
Mrs Pickett L Flowers 59 died while her husband 72 a retired carpenter was injured when the car driven by Flowers crashed through a construction barrier striking an eight ton road packer near here. The accident occurred about 12 15 p m along State Highway 1 2 miles east of Bledsoe. Witnesses said the car crossed the barrier on the wrong side of the road and rolled for more than a half mile before hitting the parked packer. Flowers died on arrival at Cochran County Hospital possibly from a broken neck. He had a heart condition noted in records. Funeral services are pending at Singleton Funeral Home.
