Los Angeles AP reports Vice President Spiro T. Agnew faces questions after a weekend speech. Close associates say he expects the probe to curb his political momentum, while a grand jury inquiry into corruption may continue.
Vice President Spiro Agnew defended his innocence before 2,000 GOP women at a National Republican Women’s Federation meeting. He blamed a federal probe and justice department officials for a supposed political conspiracy, drawing a three minute ovation before reporters.
Vienna reports clash over Schoenau transit camp for Soviet Jewish emigrants. Israeli diplomat says Austria cannot halt processing, while Austrian officials defend the private facility outside Geneva refugees rules. Chancellor Kreisky seeks a bargain to disband the camp amid hostage release.
Washington UPI reports an alleged campaign spy nicknamed Fat Jack and Dwight Chapin refused to testify before the Senate Watergate committee delaying hearings until Wednesday. Sam Dash said Chapin and John R. Buckley would invoke the Fifth Amendment. Buckley was identified as Fat Jack. The panel will resume with Donald H. Segretti expected to testify and has delayed oral arguments on a suit for tapes of five Watergate conversations.
A Silverton roper named Arnold won the OS Ranch Steer Roping event at San Angelo as part of a weekend gathering. The contest drew about 4500 spectators and raised funds for the West Texas Art Show exhibit, with Arnold clocking 81.8 seconds for the fastest run. James Allen of Santa Anna placed third and Randy See See at fourth, while observers bought much of the art on display.
An AWOL soldier Jack Reale 23 confessed to killing six persons in Virginia and Ohio. He told Allegheny County detective chief John Stack and Harrison Township Police Chief Zigmunt Walkiewicz that he also raped and killed two Pittsburgh area girls in Virginia Beach and a 1-year-old boy in Ohio. One Virginia killing occurred in a room at Hampton where he lived since May while stationed at Ft Monroe before going AWOL a week earlier. The suspects case involves Lynn Seethaler and Janie Petropola both 19 of Penn Hills Pa. The two girls were found raped and shot in a motel room in Virginia Beach on July 1.

Eight bodies recovered after a Convair turboprop with eleven aboard crashed on a mountainside near Mena Arkansas. Three remain missing as search teams face rough terrain and earlier reports of a burned wreckage. A student pilot located the crash site during a training flight from Poteau Oklahoma. Local authorities and CAP coordinate ongoing investigations amid uncertain cause and salvage efforts.
Volunteers in Lubbock start a Venereal Disease hotline at 4 pm using dial 76 414. Six student volunteers from Dr. Betty Tevis's disease of man class will staff a single line from 11 pm to 9 pm weekdays and noon to 8 pm Saturdays. The service aims to provide information and referrals while keeping calls confidential and nonmedical. Local cases of gonorrhea have risen, with 615 county cases so far in 1973, and organizers expect more than 80 additional cases by year end.
