The 13 hour ride toward Walter Reed Army Hospital followed a final checkup with no change to his prognosis. He flashed a V for victory as he departed and sent holiday wishes to his garrison before the family Thanksgiving in Washington.
Across the United States and abroad Americans observed memorials for John F. Kennedy two years after his assassination. President Johnson spoke at an interfaith service in Fredricksburg Texas, while Mrs Kennedy stayed private in New York City with her children Janet and John. Arlington Cemetery paid floral tributes to the president, and Kennedy family members placed flowers at gravesites of infant Kennedy children beside the eternal flame.
Massachusetts visitors massed at a grave site in tribute to John F. Kennedy. Figures such as Mrs. Evelyn Lincoln and Postmaster General Lawrence F. O'Brien were among mourners while Sen. Robert F. U S Air Force F105s fought heavy ground fire to destroy two Soviet built surface to air missile sites west and northwest of Hanoi. The nearest site showed a large secondary explosion and a destroyed launcher. Ground forces claimed heavy Viet Cong losses while U S units reported no aircraft losses.
Nancy Keller, 8, escaped her kidnapper during a momentary absence, fled to a plant nursery, and called her parents. Police arrested 18 year old Douglas Emerich of Bastrop after an all night search. Nancy was unharmed and safely reunited with her family as Bastrop celebrated.
Atty Gen Wag goner Carr told a federal court that anyone can afford the Texas poll tax and urged abolition under the Voting Rights Act. Carr warned the claim that poll taxes discriminate against Negroes misreads the burden on all citizens. The case, filed August, will be heard December 1 alongside similar actions in Alabama Mississippi and Virginia.
The forecast for Lubbock and vicinity calls for clear to partly cloudy skies today and tonight with a warming trend. Highs in the mid 70s and lows in the upper 40s to 50s.
