City Doctor Found Dead in Levyland Area
Dr. Doyce M. Clark, 49, a staff member of St. Mary’s and Methodist Hospitals in Lubbock, was found dead near Levelland. Sheriff Weir Clem reported no marks of foul play and an autopsy was planned in Lubbock. Clark’s car was found on an unpaved road with improvisational pillow and several items inside. authorities said he likely died several hours earlier while possibly en route to Albuquerque for a physician visit.

Severe storms battered the West and Southwest with tornadoes and damaging winds. UPI reports Houston prosecutor Frank Briscoe urged the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals to make permanent a writ barring Corpus Christi District Judge Cullen Briggs from the Howard Stickney murder case. Briggs’ lawyer Percy Foreman argued the move would deny Briggs due process amid public outcry. The court reserved ruling after a one hour hearing and issued a temporary writ. The Stay delays had already postponed Stickney’s 1958 Galveston Beach murder execution of Mrs Shirley Barnes.

A bandit robbed Alvord National Bank at about 12 45 pm forcing two cashiers and a customer into a vault. About 2000 dollars in cash was taken. The three escaped after roughly 15 minutes. Suspect described as 5 ft 6 in, 140 150 pounds with black hair and gray suit. He was spotted in Wise County and later near Fort Worth heading toward Dallas on US 183.
