Rail Wreck Injures 40 In St Louis Collision

A Wabash Railroad Can nonball Express and a switch train collided head on in North St Louis injuring about 40 people. Twenty three were hospitalized and crews escaped serious injury. The Bluebird-Cannonball runs St Louis to Decatur and on to Chicago or Detroit. The switch engine was from Terminal Railroad. Causes not yet determined.

Soviet Fighters Shoot Down Iranian Plane During Brezhnev Visit

Reported by the Associated Press, Soviet jet fighters downed an unarmed Iranian survey plane near the Soviet border while Brezhnev spoke to Parliament. Officials said two aerial officers died and the pilot was injured, amid tensions over Iran’s regional role and Soviet outreach during the visit.

Detroit trooper arrested in Royal Oak bank robbery

Detroit police say state trooper Andy J. Salkovich, 32, linked to the Royal Oak National Bank holdup, admitted the crime. FBI and local police recovered all the money. he faces federal arraignment in Detroit. The weapon was a .22 revolver. the raid occurred about 1 30 p m. at the Royal Oak bank.

No Sign Of Pilot In Gulf U-2 Wreckage Found

Wreckage of a U-2 plane was located on the Gulf of Mexico floor, cockpit empty and rescue teams noting the pilot Capt. Joe G. Hyde Jr. was not aboard. The mission reportedly over Cuba, the aircraft vanished near Key West at 10 32 a m Wednesday. Navy divers confirmed the seat was missing and the pilot was not in the cockpit. Hyde’s family in La Grange and Tucson held to hope for his survival as search efforts continued along with Navy and Coast Guard involvement.
