The Justice Department orders FBI to probe alleged voting irregularities as Kennedy leads with a large margin. officials say many inquiries are under way though concrete charges are not yet disclosed.
An editorial urges Northwest Texas cities to back the Canadian Dam plan with the Canadian River Municipal Water Authority. It notes engineers studies, 11 member cities including Lubbock, and a November 22 vote on financing, construction, and water delivery contracts. If approved, guaranteed future water supply. if rejected, project loss and risk to regional growth.
Chester Weger, a former dishwasher, repudiates his confession to killing three women at Sta State Park. Weger told his court-appointed lawyer he did not do it, a voluntary retraction made after visiting his jail cell to hear rumors. The victims Mrs. Lillian Cotting Mrs. Mildred Lindquist and Mrs. Frances Murphy were found slain in St Louis Canyon following their March visit.
About 30 000 fans watched Texas Tech defeat Arkansas as the Razorbacks drew a crowd from Lubbock and beyond. Arkansas players and band members mingled with Tech fans in the warm afternoon sun. The halftime show featured local junior tall trombone players and majorettes led by Joe Beth Chandler Pam White Carolyn Davis Jacquetta Cox Suzanne Harris and Billye King. The crowd chanted Big 12 style phrases outside the Arkansas dressing room as preparations began for future bowl possibilities.

A lone masked gunman in a gray raincoat held up the Golden Horseshoe Drive-In cashier late Saturday night, taking about $600 after demanding the cash. Off duty officer Marvin Sherrick and two witnesses described the 6 foot suspect as tall with dark eyebrows, exiting with the cash box and fleeing in the cashier's car.
Two persons were injured Saturday in a collision involving a car and a train on FM Road 12M about a half mile north of Lubbock. Carol Annicy, 14, of Shallowater, and Judy Brownlow, 14, of Abernathy, died in a separate two car crash near Amarillo.
Felipe Villareal, a Latin American resident of San Antonio, was slain on a downtown street when a man walked up and fired multiple shots at close range. A companion shouted encouragement as Villareal fought for his life, later dying at Metho Hospital. Police investigators questioned a confidential informant about the two suspects. Funeral arrangements were pending.
In Lewiston Minnesota the Rev John Eastman 98 and his six children died when their car hit a bridge Friday night. His wife Donna 27 survived. Services planned at the Presbyterian church as residents mourn the beloved pastor and his family.
