A 13 member Human Relations Committee with authority to investigate reports of discrimination by local businesses and governmental agencies is expected to be recommended to the Lubbock City Council next week. Proposed guidelines for the makeup goals and functions of such a commission were reviewed Monday by a temporary study committee. The panel would cover business and industry and investigate, discourage and seek to prevent discriminatory practices while serving as an information and conciliatory body.

Man Killed After Altercation With Sheriff at Lorenzo Farm
Lorenzo Texas near the Collins residence a 41 year old man John Alien Collins was shot to death just before 5 pm Monday after reportedly threatening Sheriff Fletcher Stark who was investigating burglaries at the property. Collins died on scene from a shotgun wound to the chest. Collins' mother Mrs Claude Collins 61 was hospitalized for lacerations and fractured ribs at West Texas Hospital in Lubbock in fair condition. Sheriff Stark said he was approached by the wife requesting help with a family disturbance at the elder Collins home where a heated verbal dispute occurred at the back door.

He broke in, carried Randy outside, and after finding Charles asleep near a burning mattress, alerted firefighters and retrieved his father. Fire investigators say a cigarette left burning ignited the mattress. Ronald's quick actions averted tragedy.
