Slaton is one of four Texas cities accredited by the United Service Organization offering transit services to troops. As Santa Fe trains arrive, soldiers receive free newspapers magazines doughnuts and cookies with matches and shaving supplies available. Service canteens sell tobaccos candies and chewing gum to soldiers. The other Texas cities with similar service are Dallas Fort Worth and Houston.

Victory Concert Slated Thursday in Lubbock
Texas school boys and girls present the second in a series of eight Victory concerts to boost war bonds and stamps sales. Lubbock Junior High bands orchestras and choirs perform at 8 p.m. in the Senior High Stadium with doors at 7:30. Admission is a war stamp or bond. Lubbock National Bank official L. C. Ellis handles bonds and teachers sell stamps. Concerts are sponsored by the Texas Music Educators association and the State Department of Education aiming at 1 million dollars in bonds and stamps. The first concert raised 1543.20 in bonds and stamps. War films and glee clubs also on the program.

Attempt On Giraud Life Reported By Paris Radio
Paris radio, controlled by the Germans, says two young French naval officers fired on Gen. Henri Giraud in Algiers yesterday morning, denouncing him as a traitor. Giraud was uninjured and the officers were disarmed and shot by Americans. No independent confirmation available.

Philippine Heroes Are Given Awards
The War Department announced that Maj. Gen. Richard J. Marshall and four high ranking officers received the Army Distinguished Service Medal for exceptionally meritorious service in the Philippines. Marshall’s wife resides in Montgomery Alabama and he was evacuated from Corregidor last December. The other awardees are believed to be former Coronaers of the Japanese, including Col. Harry H. Peck of Albuquerque New Mexico.
