The Oct 31 report outlines higher federal excises set to start tomorrow, boosting costs for liquor, tobacco, lubricants, cameras, and telephone services. The plan projects $6.88 billion more in revenue and an overall $457.6 million rise in annual consumer expenses.
Fifty German bombers raided southeastern England centering on Canterbury while Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt visited nearby. The attack, the largest since 1940, saw bombs and machine guns on shopper streets. London issued an alarm as RAF fighters claimed six German planes down with two RAF losses.
The Army specialist corps was ordered abolished by Secretary of War Stimson. Over 1,300 men already in the corps would be offered commissions as specialists in the Army of the United States if qualified. Roswell New Mexico coroner's jury ruled Staff Sergeant Boyce M. Nelson shot his wife to death and then killed himself after domestic differences. The couple wed in April in Reno and had moved to Roswell with Nelson stationed at the air base. An 18 year old stepson from Mrs Nelson's prior marriage lives in San Jose. Nelson, an Air Force veteran and Roswell instructor, died on the same date as his older brother Bernard, shot to death in Fort Worth. He had attended Abilene High School and Texas Tech. The body was to be buried in Abilene. survivors include two sisters and the parents.
Washington reports September gains in four armament categories including war planes ordnance merchant ships and naval and Army vessels. WPB chairman Donald M Nelson says production now runs nearly four times the Pearl Harbor level with four engined bomber output near schedule and new aircraft plants in production this fall. Munitions output rises seven percent from August and overall munitions improvements exceed prior expectations.
Mr and Mrs J R Terrell of Lorenzo welcomed a daughter weighing 9 pounds 4 ounces at 10 20 p m Friday night. Porter Sistrand Clinic reported the birth. Terrell is a farmer.
Training at SPAFS, home of the Winged Commandos, teaches pilots to land silently and strike with gliders. The program emphasizes night flights without instruments, feel-based handling, and unmanned arrivals to surprise enemy positions.

May-Tobie 5 Davidson, a former Borger Tex city councilman, was arraigned before District Judge Charles F Winstead on a second degree murder charge in the killing of Dallas pharmaceutical salesman W. J. Goode. The hearing was set for Nov 7 after Davidson posted $10,000 bond and had been free pending the murder case. Witnesses testified Goode was fatally wounded following an altercation at Davidsons motor court.
The U S Navy reports an unidentified aircraft carrier was sunk after bombing near Santa Cruz islands on October 26 in the South Pacific. The Porter destroyer was lost in the same engagement. three other carriers in the fleet group may include Saratoga Ranger and Enterprise, with Lexington Yorktown and Wasp previously sunk. Casualties were described as few, with next of kin to be notified.
General Marshall and Admiral King confirm an overseas US forces total of 800000 men in a correspondence on Navy Day. Marshall praises seamanship that carried them across submarine infested waters. King notes Army Navy cooperation at Bataan Midway and the Solomons.
In Guadalajara Mexico on October 31 air service along the Southern Pacific of Mexico rail line to Ne (presumably) Palos Arizona was restored after a 24 hour interruption caused by a four foot bridge fire. Military officials investigate possible sabotage.
General MacArthur reports Allied bombers hit Buin in the northern Solomons, destroying one Japanese cruiser and severely damaging another while hitting a merchant vessel. The dawn strike, using 18 tons of explosives, followed previous days of bombardments and near misses.
In the western Egyptian desert the British Eighth Army steadily reduced German strength, held new positions, and repulsed counter-attacks with air supremacy aided by American planes. Australians repelled four Axis infantry waves, with light tank support and heavy casualties noted in front-line communications.
