Washington AP report says 58 nuclear plants issued a low level security alert as guards were told to screen entrants more carefully. NRC officials cited tentative information and withheld details while a power company source noted a missing identification and another cited concerns over radical activity and a reported stolen midget submarine.
An NRC memo by safety chief Carl H Builder warns some licensed nuclear facilities may not withstand even low level design threats. The NRC says it is conservative about possible threats and has arranged alerts in the past. A separate note mentions a stolen submarine and missing identification, but officials deny links to the alert.
Scattered thunderstorms moved through the South Plains and Texas Panhandle Sunday evening. Reports from towns near Lubbock and Plainview noted hail up to golf ball size and unconfirmed funnel sightings near Hart and Tulsa. A possible tornado warning was issued for Hale County until 10:20 p.m. No damage reported by late Sunday.

Candidate Jackie Sullivan denounces the Avalanche Journal for misrepresenting his campaign. He accuses the paper of mudslinging and ignoring his drive to critique Sheriff Blanchard’s record while denying personal attacks. Sullivan says his ads focus on public performance as county sheriff.

A head on collision 20 miles east of here on U S 380 Sunday evening killed Margaret S. Thomason 34 of Brownfield and injured her husband Clynton J. Thomason 33 and their three children Pattie 14 Melissa 7 and Shannon Dale 9. The crash involved a car driven by Clynton Thomason and another driven by Gary Don Brashears 17 of Welch. Mrs Thomason died on arrival at Methodist Hospital in Lubbock.
