Early morning robbery at a service station nets the bandit 43 dollars and a 20 dollar check. The incident is part of the day’s crime report across the Lubbock area with authorities investigating.
United States motorists filled Memorial Day weekend with deadly collisions as the toll climbed toward the 1965 record. Howard Pyle of the National Safety Council warned of a crisis and urged a total national effort despite the cost, as 171 deaths had occurred by late Saturday and steady state mobilization followed nationwide.
Severe storms lit up the Panhandle and South Plains with at least four tornado funnels, golf ball hail, and heavy rain. A twister near Dimmitt unroofed a 20 by 30 foot barn on the J C Newton farm, debris scattered 100 yards, while another near Abernathy caused minor damage. No major injuries reported as watches extended into the night.
Hale Center recalls the 1965 South Plains tornado that destroyed downtown and left five dead and forty injured. Civil Defense warnings likely saved many lives as residents sheltered and reporters faced the approach of the storm during a chaotic night.
The Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation named Dr John W Gladden as superintendent of the Lubbock State School to be established in 1967. The announcement came via an Associated Press dispatch from Austin. About 1 456 graduates plus 6 500 guests heard Moody urge students to make their own decisions and cite the non conformist generation. Top honors went to Leroy Vance Hill Patricia McClain Thomas Nancy Hood Lloyd Cromburg Jr and William Clarke in agriculture arts English home economics and science and engineering and business.
A nun set herself on fire in Hue, sparking clashes between about 20,000 demonstrators and troops. Monks and nuns led marches in Saigon with tear gas and barricades as protests against the Ky regime intensified. A hunger strike at a Saigon pharmacy school added pressure for regime change.
Torrential rains in Recife, Brazil, caused 15 deaths and multiple landslides, destroying several shantytowns and damaging homes. Authorities dispatched rescue teams as the flood toll rose.
The Texas Tech board of directors approved a $691,000 museum building plan with 52,000 square feet, about 50 percent larger than the current facility. The college will pay roughly $480,000, with $211,000 raised by the museum. Bids for the structure at 4th Street and Indiana Avenue will open this summer, and the present building will be converted to classroom and office space. The Peter Hurd mural will be retained.
