Impatient Court Presses South on Desegregation Ruling

The Supreme Court ruled nine years after the desegregation order that Southern communities move faster. It rejected gradualism for Memphis parks and libraries and sent the case back to the 6th Circuit for prompt action. The court also dismissed Gov. Wallace’s challenge to federal troops in Birmingham.

Severe South Plains storm causes injuries and fires

Vicious thunderstorms with winds to 75 mph swept the South Plains causing dust, hail and heavy rain. A farm laborer was injured near Clovis by lightning and two fires started in Hale County near Plainview. Power failures and damaged crops were reported across multiple towns including Amarillo.

Crash Kills City Man

A Lubbock man Clifton G. Brownlee 26 died on arrival at Swisher County Hospital after his pickup left U S 87 near Tulia. Investigating officer said no skid marks and the cab sailed 43 feet before hitting a concrete abutment. Services were pending with Henderson Wilson Funeral Directors in Lubbock and Wallace Funeral Home handled local arrangements. He survived by his parents a daughter and two sons and a sister and grandmother and an aunt.

More than 300000 dollars stolen by an armored car guard in Vancouver has been found in three suitcases at a Hope, British Columbia restaurant. Two men were arrested but not charged yet. The suspect, Douglas John Brown, 35, is held in Toronto and faces robbery charges after fleeing with 550000 dollars the night before. He hinted at a deal for a lighter sentence in exchange for information. Brown was arrested in Rio de Janeiro.

Pope John XXIII Said To Have Three To Four Weeks

Vatican reports the 81 year old pope may have only weeks to live. Doctors ordered bed rest as the sacristan stayed near his apartments and extreme unction was prepared. A Kennedy visit to Rome in June was put in doubt as plans were canceled and officials awaited further word on the pontiff's condition.

Girl Killed When Struck Crossing Street in Midland

An 11yearold Midland girl died after being hit by a car while crossing with her 2yearold sister near Cuthbert Street and North Lamesa Road. Sylvia Perales died at Midland Memorial Hospital. Susie Perales was hospitalized with a fractured arm and facial contusions. The driver, Mrs Jacquelyn McGee, said she did not see the children. investigation by officer T D Owens continues. Arrangements for the child are pending at Thomas Funeral Home.

Famed triplet dies at 95 in Framingham Massachusetts

Charity, Faith Hope and Charity, once a national curiosity for a six week old baby show win in 1868, died at Cushing Hospital at age 95. Her sister Hope passed just over a year earlier. Faith Annie Faity McDonnell is the sole surviving member. Charity Nora Charity Murphy was Edward Murphy’s widow, a former Boston and Worcester newspaperman. Hope’s full name was Ellen Hope Daniels.

Wilkinson resigns after nine years on Lubbock school board

Russell Wilkinson announced his resignation from the Lubbock school board after nine years of service at a luncheon meeting. Trustees hired 14 teachers and approved a salary schedule upgrade for certified staff. Williams noted Wilkinson’s valued guidance and long commitment to a high quality program. Transition to the new salary system will start in 1963-64 as the district seeks a successor for the remaining term.

Sugar prices tumble on U S and London markets

U S spot raw sugar fell to 11.80 per hundred pounds in New York, futures slid for the third straight day, while London spot sugar dropped to 13.86 a hundred. Canadian refiners cut prices 25 cents to 17.40, and U S refiners saw stock declines as hearings on price rises were announced in Congress for Byrd and Sullivan with witnesses from the Agriculture Department.
