The Commerce Department reports a 4 per cent rise in its leading indicators for April, the sixth consecutive monthly gain, signaling a continuing but modest economic expansion. Officials caution some sectors show weakness and unemployment remains a concern despite the overall uptick.
In Yuba City California 37 year old farm labor contractor Juan Corona was charged with murder over the killings of at least 12 men buried along the Feather River. Deputies have unearthed multiple bodies during weeks of digging while Corona sits in jail facing murder counts and a strict gag order is in place.
Severe weather rumbled across the area with high winds up to fifty mph, marble and pea size hail, and heavy rain in Floydada Plainview and surrounding towns. Rain totals varied from trace to several inches with Floydada reporting 3 to 4 inches.
A ceremony today awards S41 students the aero nautical pilot rating, marking completion of training. The event highlights achievement within the aviation education program and honors successful cadets from the area.

A proposal to eliminate alleys in large planned developments was discussed with Henry Huneke presenting the idea for a residential project west of University Avenue. Utility access, underground lines, and parkway costs were debated as possible impacts of alley removal on housing costs and easements.
South Vietnamese troops overran a base camp near the DMZ and uncovered 98 six foot rockets of an unknown type. Allied officers, including two generals, could not identify the missiles, noting engines larger than a 122mm rocket and an estimated range about 20 miles. At least 60 Communist soldiers were killed in the fighting.
Dunbar High School closes 1971 with a capacity crowd as 11 seniors receive diplomas in the auditorium. Speakers include honor graduate Charles Melton and top student Dwight Gibson, who address pride loyalty and competition in a theme “We Came We Saw We Can Never Forget.”
About 2,800 relatives attended the Lubbock High School commencement at the Municipal Coliseum. The 477 graduates included 101 honor students with three top speakers Brenda Huerta Ricky Alexander and Margaret Durham selected by a faculty student committee. Weather included a rain shower and a leaky roof that briefly moved spectators.
A survey notes noise from jets, lawnmowers, motorcycles, and chain saws is worsening across the nation. An official warns the constant din could become permanently deafening in 30 years unless action is taken. Details for local and national comments are on Page 8, Section E.
Austin reports that Texas Tech plans for a medical school and a veterinary facility triggered a budget fight between Senate and House conferees. They settled on a cap of 17.5 million in tuition backed bonds to begin construction, while a separate vet school proposal and faculty pay raise remained undecided.
After late session brinkmanship over spending and redistricting the appropriations bill heads to the printer with about 40 million dollars less than requested. Heatly notes money ran out while conferees doubt Lubbock County can fund a teaching hospital for the School of Medicine.
Lubbock County would be divided into two districts under a committee voted proposal. One district would include Lubbock and Slaton and elect two representatives. the other would be a single member for the rest of the county and parts of Hale, Hockley, and Terry counties. Representative Delwin Jones predicts rural District 76. A Bayport area explosion and chemical plant fire in Harris County followed.
Capco Inc a capacitor maker plans to shutter its two Lubbock plants by Oct 4 relocate operations to Grand Junction Colorado. The Hub City site with 90 to 100 workers will close though most jobs stay behind as the company cites zoning issues and facility inadequacy. City and chamber officials lament the move and say they tried to relocate Capco to a suitable Lubbock site.
The forecast calls for a 20 percent chance of showers today and tonight. Highs should reach the mid 90s on today and Friday, with a low in the upper 50s and southerly winds 20 to 30 mph gusty today.
