Smathers comments on potential vice presidential spot
Sen. George Smathers of Florida said in Washington that a Democratic vice presidential nomination remains within the ballpark but unlikely. He dismissed Texas Gov. John Connally as a possible No. 2 choice, noting Connally’s ties to Johnson and that Humphrey would avoid being seen as Johnson’s stooge. Smathers added it could be possible if peace were achieved in Vietnam.

Poor Campaign at Resurrection City sees mixed turnout
Officials of the Poor People’s Campaign watched arrivals and departures thin the Resurrection City shantytown near its 3000 capacity as 400 young demonstrators from Chicago Detroit and other Midwestern cities were expelled for disciplinary reasons. Rev James Bevel defended the campaign while a large band of Southern Negro youths sang and greeted impoverished residents. The march traced routes from Mississippi through Alabama Georgia and the Carolinas before reaching Virginia. A nonresident observer donated supplies amid ongoing housing waits. The Louisiana shore erosion continues at six to 125 feet annually.
