The United Presbyterian Church in the U S A adopted a new Confession of 1967 at its 179th general assembly in Portland Oregon marking a historic shift in doctrinal basis after nine years of work led by church leaders and members.
William Bowden, long associated with Monterey and son of W C Bowden of Lubbock, earned an academic award to study at the University of Edinburgh. The grant through the Institute of International Education supports his PhD study in British philosophy and literature while he continues work at Tulsa and Bethany College. He plans to depart New York July 6 visiting Rome, Athens, Cairo, Jerusalem, Moscow, and London en route.
The 4 500 word creed expands Presbyterian confessional standards drawing on major historic creeds and aiming to address modern issues such as racial justice poverty and sexual morality. The vote followed five hours of debate and inclusive ratifications across presbyteries with the Standing vote near four to one in favor.
