Heavy Rain Floods Crosbyton Area And Scout Party Stranded

A squall line drenched Crosbyton and surrounding South Plains districts with 4.01 inches of rain and hail. Water swept Blanco Canyon roads, flooding streets and forcing a Girl Scout group to seek shelter when a rising White River barrier swept over a stepping stone. Mrs. Sam Davis was rescued with a rope as others assisted.

McCarthy Urges Ike To Be Free In Probe

Sen McCarthy told a Wisconsin banquet he would remind President Eisenhower of 1924 Teapot Dome precedents. Two Suspected Arms Shipments To Guatemala Reported

Rep Hillings says two or more vessels carrying Communist arms are bound for Guatemala and may be intercepted by friendly ports. The State Department calls the shipment from Poland an important arms delivery and Eisenhower warns of the danger as calls grow for a Pan American NATO response.

Hale Pioneers Hold Reunion in Plainview Parade

The 2th annual Pioneer Roundup in Plainview drew an estimated 8 000 to 10 000 spectators for a mile long parade featuring riding groups bands and pioneer floats. The day included registration reminiscence at City Auditorium music on the courthouse lawn a chuck wagon supper recognition services and a square dance finale sponsored by the Plainview Business and Professional Women's Club.

Dryland South Plains set for record cotton harvest

For the first time in four years virtually every dryland farm in the South Plains has enough moisture to plant cotton and other crops. Agricultural leaders see a possible 1,832,500 bale harvest and $289,105,446 income if factors like rain, pests, hail, and prices align as expected. Estimates from Lubbock and Plainview observers underpin the forecast.

San Antonioan Favored for Lubbock Methodist Post

Officials say Dr. J Chess Lovern of San Antonio is a leading candidate for the new pastor at Lubbock First Methodist Church though an official announcement is a week away. The Northwest Texas Conference Cabinet met in Abilene to discuss transfers and a successor to the late Dr H I Robinson. A transfer from his conference would enable the selection.

Levelland Bond Issue Defeated by Narrow Margin

Levelland voters narrowly defeated a $1,375,000 school bond issue by 19 votes in a Saturday election. The special election drew about 913 voters out of roughly 3,500 eligible, with turnout noted as relatively light for the area and the senior high school project remaining unfunded.

Speedup In Hearings Targeted For Two Week Finish

Senator Mundt predicted the McCarthy Army hearings will wrap in about two weeks as the televised process resumes Monday. He said the Senate subcommittee will proceed to write a findings report despite ongoing disputes over calls to the Pentagon. Knowland urged ground-rule revisions for witness rights subpoenas hearing procedures and TV issues to guide the next Congress.

Heavy French Air Assaults Hit Reds

Heavy French air raids struck Vietminh forces near the Red River Delta as relief columns liberated two outposts and a southeastern Anka fort housing 160 troops was overrun. A French commander said Vietminh shifting from Dien Bien Phu did not yet threaten Hanoi.

Train Derailed In Littlefield

A Santa Fe freight derailment near Littlefield caused seven cars to leave the rails and damaged four more on an adjacent track. No injuries were reported. Property damage was estimated around 15 000 with 10 000 to rolling stock and roadbed and 5 000 to cargo. Train service was restored by 6:15 p.m. Potash cars were involved and the incident affected an adjacent warehouse equipment and lading. See Train Page 10.

European General Manager Kingsbury Smith conferred with Soviet Foreign Minister V M Molotov in Geneva. Sources say Molotov urged a quick Indochina armistice via a regroupment of forces leading to a possible partition with the south under Franco-Vietnamese control and the north under Vietminh.

In New Orleans on May 22 a single-story house at 518 First St. housing eight Negro families is flooded by a swamplike odor after an uprooted cess pool gator inhabits the space. The Rev. Louis Jackson and neighbor Charlotte Rucell describe police entering with pistols and refusing to crawl under the house as residents cope with the strange intruder.
