Second Plane Crash On Mt McKinley Rescue Flight Ends Fire

A mercy flight plane crashed while aiding four injured climbers on Mt McKinley. Pilot William Stevenson of Anchorage survived at about 18,000 feet. Four climbers remained in critical condition as rescue teams persevered up the mountain. Helga Bading, an Anchorage climber, was rushed to hospital after a prior rescue by Don Sheldon.

A Gulfport Mississippi woman described a gripping home split over alcohol as 500 attendees heard an educational session on alcoholism at O L Slaton Junior High School. The program co sponsored by the Texas Commission on Alcoholism and Alcoholics Anonymous featured speaker T Jr and a team of four.

Soviet Space Ship Guidance Fails. Orbits Higher Than Planned

Tass reports the Soviet experimental space ship developed a fault in its orientation system on May 19. Aimed to brake and reenter, the retrorocket blast deviated, increasing speed and sending the craft into a higher elliptic orbit while the pressurized cabin separated and remains alongside the mother ship.

Kennedy In Oregon Leads In Last 1960 Primary

UPI reports Senator John F Kennedy led in Oregon with 987 votes to 670 for Senator Wayne Morse from 34 of 2 882 precincts. Hubert Humphrey Symington and Lyndon Johnson trailed, Nixon led the GOP unopposed with 1 629. Morse hoped a home state win could spark a convention outcome.

Four Lake Huron Freighters In Two Collisions

Four lake freighters were involved in two separate collisions on foggy lower Lake Huron Friday. Two ships remained locked together in a T shape, one grounded in 22 feet of water. No crewmen of the four vessels were seriously injured.

Atlas missile soars 9000 miles in record test flight

The Atlas intercontinental missile flew 9000 miles from Cape Canaveral to an Indian Ocean target southeast of Africa. Weighing 125 tons, it reached speeds up to 17000 mph and 1000 miles altitude, dropping its nose cone 1000 miles from the impact area as two Air Force aircraft and a ship observed the re entry.

Thousands of visitors are expected as Reese Air Force Base hosts Armed Forces Day events with 23 aircraft from Air Force Army Navy. A two hour air show begins at 2 p.m. featuring F-100 jets C-124 C-130 B-17 B-57 and more. Public hours 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with demonstrations, aerobatics, flyovers and military displays.
