Preliminary 1960 census figures show Lubbock city at 125,? no, city 125? (text unclear) with a gain of 56,321 since 1950 and a population in the metropolitan area of 155,484, up 34,437. Severe thunderstorms sweep South Plains with hail and winds
Thunderstorms raked the South Plains and Panhandle late Tuesday bringing 65 mph winds and golf ball sized hail. Tornado funnels were sighted but did not touch ground. Damage occurred in Plainview and near Shallowater with a drive in theater screen blown down and roofs ripped. No serious injuries reported. more storms expected today.

Four Die When Private Plane Crashes At Sea Near Bahamas
