Tornadoes Rip Through South Plains Sparking Severe Weather
At least nine tornadoes and funnel clouds plus fierce thunderstorms battered the South Plains in a fourth day of storms. A twister damaged a Joe Fisher farm near Amherst worth about 10000 dollars, while another tornado toppled a trailer and struck a pickup near Lazbud die. No injuries reported. Heavy rains filled 4 inch belts in Floyd County’s Sandhill and 3 inch downpours hit Muleshoe and Abernathy as gusty winds and dust marked the day.

Ferguson of Lubbock to receive Medal of Honor today
F. E. Ferguson, a 29 year old Army CWO and Flying Helicopter instructor at Ft. Wolters, is set to receive the Medal of Honor from President Nixon for heroism in Vietnam. He helped rescue a downed helicopter pilot and evacuated the wounded under heavy fire. He already holds the Silver Star Bronze Star Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal awards and the Vietnamese Cross for Gallantry. Ferguson is named military aviator of the year for 1968 by the Wright Brothers Committee. He and his parents reside at 4939 7th St in Lubbock after moving from El Centro California.
