Abu Simbel temples saved by 1960s international project
The Abu Simbel temples faced flooding from the Nile, prompting UNESCO, the US, Sweden, and other nations to plan a 1964 removal. The plan cut the large temple into sections up to 30 tons each, moved them to higher ground, and reassembled with an epoxy fill and steel reinforcements. Completion of re erection was projected for 1970 with the smaller temple nearly finished.
