Reds In Control Of British Cooperatives
London AP report says communists and allies won control of London’s Cooperative Movement before this weekend’s national congress. They swept membership elections, ousting John Stonehouse and anti Communist allies. Harold Clayden became president. The movement runs 30,000 stores and serves over 13 million customers. Financial strain and competition from chains pressure co ops. A plan seeks merger of the Cooperative Wholesale Society, Scottish Wholesale Society, and the Cooperative Union into a new national body with a 40 member board.
