Turbulent Weather Kills Four Across State

Turbulence from a cold front brought heavy hail, high winds and flooding across the state Saturday. Four deaths were reported, including a traffic collision and tornado sightings near Deming and Odessa. Rain totals varied from trace to .59 inches, with minor property damage and no injuries reported in some areas.

Tech LCC Hold Graduation Rites At Texas Tech University

The 47th annual commencement at Municipal Coliseum featured about 2 000 graduates from Texas Tech and Lubbock Christian College. Dr R Frederick Thieme of the University of Colorado spoke on science progress and the space program, noting a low birth rate and the violent revolutionary era.

Judge refuses to act on perjury claim in Meadows case

Dallas AP reports District Court Judge John Vance will not initiate perjury proceedings against John ny Meadows who is serving a life term after pleading guilty to killing one West Texas woman. Meadows alleges Texas branding by Ector County officers. Texas AG Bill presumed the marks were self made with help from another inmate. The Ector County grand jury asked Judge Vance to present the perjury accusations to a Dallas grand jury.

Bulldozer rammed wall of finance firm in Conroe

A bulldozer borrowed from a construction project rammed the front brick wall of Great Western Finance Co at Courthouse Square in Conroe. A passerby compared the scene to a bomb explosion as police recovered the idling machine. no injuries were reported.

Skylab Countdown Underway As Astronauts Prepare

Skylab 1 crew Charles Conrad Joseph Kerwin and Paul Weitz head to Cape Kennedy to join Saturn 5 launch crews for a 28 day mission. The trio will observe a Monday launch at 12 30 CDT with a Tuesday suit up for their own liftoff at 1 pm. They have been in quarantine at Johnson Space Center since April 24 to prevent disease delays.
