Gov Preston Smith stunned lawmakers by suggesting a recall of the $903 million tax bill and removal of costly new taxes. He criticized the 2 cent per gallon gasoline tax boost slated to fund highway spending and met with the Dirty 30 lawmakers. Some House members showed interest in recalling the bill, though Speaker Gus Mutscher opposed reopening it. Smith signaled possible veto threats as he waits to study the measure.
Pioneer heart surgeon Christiaan Barnard conducts a seven hour operation on 44 year old Dirk Van Zyl at Groote Schuur Hospital. The donor was a 24 year old man who died after injuries from a fall. Van Zyl's condition is listed as satisfactory.
