Medical examiner opposes heart transplant donor death questions
In Houston, Dr Denton A Cooley's team completed its third heart transplant in five days. Harris County medical examiner Dr Joseph A Jachimczyk said the donor Clarence Nicks was pronounced dead at 10 50 a m but his heart remained beating until about 2 p m before transfer to 62 year old hospital administrator John M Stuckwish of Alpine. The examiner said he cautioned against proceeding and did not authorize it. The case raises ethical questions about donor death criteria.
