Texas House votes to retain death penalty in electric chair

Texas lawmakers rejected an amendment to abolish the death penalty, 107 to 38, amid routine revisions to the state's criminal procedure code. Representative J C Whitfield of Houston argued capital punishment fails to deter crime while the omnibus bill was under discussion.

Weems Dies Ends a Jazz Era Leader Ted Weems

Bandleader Ted Weems died Monday night in a Tulsa hospital at age 62 after seven weeks of treatment for emphysema. He rose to fame in the 1930s and 40s with hits like Heartaches and helped launch careers such as Perry Como. Weems lived in Dallas in recent years and led bands in hotels and ballrooms nationwide during the golden era. Funeral arrangements were incomplete.
