The proposal calls for a 20 000 kilowatt gas turbine at 2 million dollars to be ordered and installed by next summer while engineering work proceeds and a second 44 000 kilowatt steam turbine at 9.3 million dollars would be ordered and installed for use by 1976. An additional 2.4 million is budgeted for transmission lines to connect the new facilities. See Bond Page 14.
A Lubbock area independent jobber says major oil companies may use a fuel crisis to squeeze independents. James Godwin reports closing about 10 of 44 service stations due to reduced supplies and higher prices. He warns more closures possible as cuts spread among major distributors. An industry spokesman predicts rationing and a shakeout of non branded stations.
Lubbock Coronado High School band and Lubbock Monterey High School boys choir won top honors at the Greater Southwest Music Festival in Amarillo. About 11,410 students from 98 school systems across five states participated, with 85 concert bands 31 stage bands 21 marching bands 60 choirs and 22 orchestras competing.
Tom Cunningham director of cafeterias explained that the district uses a master menu only for a few final weeks of school. He said menus change daily to match student tastes across areas and grade levels. The aim is to feed students and teach proper eating while managing low stock with varying offerings. A two-vehicle collision in Lubbock County killed Sheriff’s deputy Randy Holley and Vietnam veteran Michael Lee Whittle early Saturday. Four others in the Johnson vehicle were hospitalized with injuries. The fatalities raise the county road death total to 18 for 1973. Services for Holley are scheduled for Monday morning with burial at Old Runnels Cemetery.
Ex White House aide Egil Krogh reportedly signed an affidavit admitting he supervised the burglary of Daniel Ellsberg's psychiatrist. The disclosure ties into Watergate and Pentagon Papers cases as Krogh sent copies to Judge W Matt Byrne in Los Angeles where Ellsberg and Russo face trial. President Nixon and Ehrlichman reportedly did not know of the break-in in advance.
Weather map notes show thunderstorms and showers today with windy relief. In Spain a fatal crash killed Jose Martinez and a pedestrian. no other injuries reported. UPI reports Nixon aides resignations and Haig to take interim White House duties amid Watergate fallout. Cosmos satellite launched by USSR remains in normal operation.
