West Bridgewater Massachusetts resident Frank DuFault razed his 150-year-old eight-room former carriage house after taxes rose from 800 to nearly 1400 in one year. He plans to sell the four acres left to the contractor tearing down the house, saying repeated tax increases forced his action.
AUSTIN AP The House voted to scrap the methamphetamine penalty and replace it with a lesser offense. A subcommittee bill supported by Gov. Briscoe would alter education programs, with debate on a substitute from Rep. Von Dohlen. Briscoe urged acceptance amid constitutional concerns. Nixon naming aide to streamline staff during Watergate fallout.

Martha Mitchell, wife of former Attorney General John Mitchell, testifies that the White House leaked false stories about her amid Watergate inquiries. She says she has no firsthand Watergate knowledge and claims she has faced harsh scrutiny and rumors, including claims of mental illness.
President Nixon declared in his State of the World Message that Hanoi faces two choices. If it continues infiltrating troops into South Vietnam and remains in Laos and Cambodia, it would risk renewed conflict and imperil peace gains. The alternative is to abide by the Vietnam settlement, remove troops from Laos and Cambodia, and fully account for missing servicemen.
George Gallup reports a nationwide survey shows 40 percent think Nixon did not sell the whole truth about Watergate, while 30 percent believe he was involved. About half say he knew in advance of the bugging, and a majority view Watergate as a matter of great importance.
