Plans for Columbia town center near Washington Baltimore

A sweeping development concept for Columbia, a fast growing corridor between Washington and Baltimore, envisions 15,200 acres bought in nine months with $50 million backing from Connecticut General Life Insurance and others. The plan features interconnected neighborhoods with five three story “riding trails,” a central shopping mall, schools, nurseries, and a dense transportation network to reduce traffic. It aims to house 3,619 acres of open space, 3,000 acres for commercial use, and varied dwelling units from garden apartments to 10 acre estates, centered around a town core and a future sewer system laid in advance to prevent future disruption. The project emphasizes profit as a primary objective and includes a detailed, multi-neighborhood layout to accommodate rapid growth.
