Caetano warns of U S Azores base shift to NATO
Lisbon prime minister Marcello Caetano said the United States must formally renew its agreement for the Lajes air base or it will be turned over to NATO. He noted the de facto situation since 1962 and warned the base could become a NATO facility with restricted use. Caetano pressed for a renewal or an alternative arrangement.
