North Vietnamese sappers attacked a U S artillery base south of Da Nang under mortar cover, killing 33 Americans and wounding 76. Defenders with helicopter gunships and air power forced the attackers back as the base remained in friendly hands.
Congress moves toward an Easter recess while debating a two year draft extension and a wage price rent control extension. The House acts on a Senate resolution to extend Nixon authority to June 1, 1973, and pay raises totaling 2.7 billion are authorized to recruit volunteers.
A police officer and a spectator were hurt as hundreds confronted undercover narcotics officers at a Houston rock concert in Milky Park. Seventeen arrests followed a barrage of missiles after the officers attempted arrests.
The Texas Legislature plans a busy week as hearings unfold on the House tax bill totaling 192.5 million dollars with Senate scrutiny of a fuel tax for jet airliners and taxes on professional sports. A 23 year old woman Rosa Ochoa Rodriguez died after being struck by a northbound car in the 2400 block of Avenue Q in Lubbock. The driver fled but was later located at a Temple Avenue home and jailed. Services are pending. This marks Lubbock County’s sixth traffic death of the year and the 25th on the South Plains.
A three alarm fire in Dallas destroyed Semos Restaurant in Oak Cliff West Dallas with estimated losses around 75000 dollars. The Anchor Club and the Triangle Pawn Shop were also damaged and an investigation into the fire's origin was underway.
The Soil Conservation Service warns that a single wind storm can erase three to four inches of topsoil, while ongoing soil-saving efforts since the Dust Bowl cut losses from 150–175 tons per acre to about five. Conservationists praise farmer adoption of protective measures.
