A US air lift carries 14 POWs from Laos along with Canadian captives as the Vietnam pullout proceeds. The evacuees head to a Pacific base for processing and reunions with families.
The FBI annual report shows Lub bock major crimes fell 11 percent in 1972 from 6 201 to 5 521, with El Paso posting the only larger decline among Texas cities. Overall Texas trends include Amarillo down 2 percent and Corpus Christi down 1 percent, while Houston and San Antonio rose 3 percent and Fort Worth fell 6 percent, Dallas down 3 percent.
President Nixon vetoed a 2.6 billion package expanding vocational rehabilitation and aid for the physically handicapped, kidney disease patients, and other groups. He warned Congress that approving the measure would swell the budget by about 1 billion over three years, risking tax increases or higher prices and rates. He argued the plan creates a patchwork of new grants and blurs responsibility while overlapping existing programs.
Washington area grocery cooperatives say they will close 13 stores on Saturday in a one day protest seeking a freeze on food prices. Eric Waldbaum of Consumers Supermarkets says halting price spirals is vital while Safeway’s John Shepherd calls the plan imaginative. The action includes a full page ad in the Washington Post and signatures gathered outside stores to present to chain officials.

Lubbock Secret Service agent describes counterfeit twenty dollar bills as the favorite for forgers due to easy acceptance. He notes only a few thousand counterfeit incidents yearly in the South Plains and Panhandle and explains scammers pass fake notes with small purchases, converting to real cash at 10 to 50 cents on the dollar.

A Pacific cold front hit West Texas bringing strong winds dust and light rain to Lubbock. Gusts reached 62 mph as officials warned of continued strong winds and a chance of more rain with partly cloudy skies forecast today.
A weather system sparked showers and scattered storms across North and West Texas with hail possible in spots. Reports of a tornado near Hereford caused damage but no injuries. The storm front affected Lubbock and the South Plains with forecasts of widespread interference through Thursday.
