Witness Andrew Ursua said Upshaw’s northbound vehicle veered left, struck the culvert, and overturned, the car a total loss. Upshaw’s death marked the city’s fifth traffic fatality of the year and the county’s 11th this year.
Sudden price cuts caused a furor as one chain station offered regular gasoline at 18.9 cents a gallon and Ethyl at 23.9 cents. Other nonchain stations reportedly matched 22.9 to 23.9 cents amid heavy demand in Northeast Lubbock. A rival nearby did not advertise the sale.
