The South Plains 19 counties gained population in 1944 per figures from the Lubbock Office of Price Administration. Gaines county led gains with a 6.6 percent rise to an estimated 2,616. The 16 county total reached 381,643, up 8.6 percent from 1943, while overall regional total was 202,119, down 21.2 percent from 1940.
