Convicts Seize 16 Hostages at Tennessee Penitentiary

Two armed inmates held 16 people hostage inside the Tennessee Penitentiary in Nashville including 12 civilians and four guards. Corrections officials said the prisoners demanded freedom a car and two hostages to accompany them. Authorities refused concessions and sought a peaceful resolution while threats of wholesale murder were made. A priest and prison staff urged release but to no avail.

Road plans authorized for five South Plains highway projects

The Texas Highway Commission authorized preparation of plans for five South Plains highway projects in the 1961 62 advance planning consolidated program for District Five. C L Crain district engineer said the 33 miles of work will cost about 3 215 000 with contracts likely awarded late summer or early fall after right of way is provided. The package includes two Lub bock County improvements notably Loop 289 phase two and widening 19th Street.

Cowboys parade opens annual ABC Boys Club event

Cowboys came in all sizes as the ABC Boys Club parade and rodeo began. Jack Waggoner aged 5 Steve Wyatt aged 5 and Monte Williams aged 3 watched the horses as hundreds of spectators filled the scene on 32nd and 25th Streets.

Record $2.06 High Per Pound for Grand Champion Steer

At the South Plains Junior Fat Stock Show in Lubbock the grand champion Angus sold for a record $2.06 per pound, highest ever for the event. Rudolph Baumgardner, 16, Plainview 4-H, watched as bids climbed from $1 to the final total of $1,959.06 for the 951 pound steer. The sale was led by Supreme Beef Co. and Lewter Grain Co. as veterans noted the milestone.

Rodeo Opens in Lubbock as Many Injured in Start

The ABC Rodeo opened in the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum drawing 4500 fans with several injuries. Pampa rider Buster Ivory suffered rib and shoulder injuries from a fall but is not in serious condition. Jim Shoulders failed to stay aboard a bull and will take a re-ride later. Benny Reynolds won bareback with 180 to 175 over Humry Williams. Jim Bob Altizer won calf rope and tied his calf. The rodeo continues through Saturday night.

Khrushchev Pushes for German Peace Pact in Paris

Premier Khrushchev urged France to back a Germany peace treaty during a banquet at the Elysee Palace. He pressed for recognition of East Germany as independent and West Berlin as an open city, while warning of German recourse to disarmament and nuclear testing issues.

Far Above Estimate Board Balks At Bids For Special School

Dorrance Guy reports that the Lubbock Independent School District trustees balked at bids on the proposed Special School at 42nd and Ave L and ordered a conference with architects Butler Kimmel Co, the contractor with the lowest bid H A Padgett, and district officials. The project estimate was 538,800 but the lowest bid reached 587,115, nearly 34 above the estimate. The building would be 4,884 square feet, costing about 18 per square foot, with air conditioning a major expense as the plan called for refrigerated cooling but only five tons were deemed necessary. Bids submitted include J D Bell 98,363 H R Bundock 93,240 J R Givens and Son 87,900 Knox and Gailey 96,600 and Carl Maxey 92,823. The board scheduled a conference to see if costs can be reduced.

Lamesa Man Killed in Shootout with Police

A 39-year-old Lamesa man, James Thomas Anthony, was shot and killed after firing a shotgun at officers who responded to a disturbance call. Patrolman James Montgomery and Officer James Smoot returned fire, Anthony dying at Medical Arts Hospital. His 18-year-old son faces aggravated assault charges.

Franklin P. Adams Dies at 78 Noted Humorist and Columnist

Franklin P. Adams renowned for the Conning Tower column in major New York newspapers died at 78 from arteriosclerosis. Lubbock Amarillo Narrow Water Cost Formula Talks

C W Ratliff reports officials from Lubbock and Amarillo met Thursday to agree on a differential rate formula for water from the Canadian River dam project. Lubbock proposed paying 25 percent more than Amarillo on capital costs with equal water shares, while Amarillo had urged paying its dam cost plus 50 percent and shared pipeline costs with equal water split.
