Tragedy in Downtown San Jose After Boiler Blast

A boiler explosion rocked a four story downtown San Jose building housing a drug store and a J C Penney department store. Three people died and at least 73 injured as hospitals swamped with victims and emergency crews rushed to the scene.

Bali Volcano Death Toll Rises After Eruption

The Bali Agung volcano near northeast Bali village continues to erupt, raising the official death toll to 1,264 with 64 injured and 75,000 listed as refugees. Officials expect ongoing eruptions for at least two months as more evacuations are ordered within eight to 10 miles of the mountain.

Five Hurt In Area Mishaps In West Texas Crashes

A 15 year old Alesia Stephens of Lamesa died when a family station wagon overturned after a tire blowout on U S 87 north of O Donnell. Her mother sustained a broken back and poor condition while her father and younger brother were treated and released. A separate Lubbock collision injured a Lovington woman and three children as a tractor trailer struck a station wagon at N Ash Street and Loop 289. Mrs Ramona Brown 26 and her children Shonji Marie Brown 5 Steve Brown 9 Shannon Roland Brown 3 were hospitalized with injuries. Brown was in critical condition and the children were observed and listed in fair condition.

County spelling champs rise to 18 with 19th to be named today

Sherry Combs of Checotah Oklahoma set a barrel racing record with 14.1 seconds as Lubbock’s Charles Workman and Dick Bryant posted high bronc scores. Ed Workman tied for third in bareback riding and later took second in steer wrestling. Clyde Vampores led bareback with 173 points. Francis Glenewinkel follows Combs in barrel racing.

Four Die In Houston Crash Across Road Cable

A car plowed into a steel cable stretched across a northwest Houston road Friday night, killing four members of the Holloway family and injuring a fifth child who remained in critical condition. The deceased were Mr and Mrs Holloway both about 40, their three year old daughter Tammy, and their one year old son. The surviving child Pamela, four, was listed in critical condition.

Welfare payments to hospitals expanded by city county bodies

The Lub bock City County Welfare Dept will broaden reimbursements for indigent care. Key changes: raise charity room cap to 15 dollars, pay a five dollar emergency room fee, allow arbitration to cover blood transfusions and physical therapy, and extend payments for other services on same basis as paying patients. Also relax family eligibility rules, let arbitration review maternity cases, and begin ICU per day payments of 48 dollars for doctor ordered stays at Methodist Hospital. Formal votes to come later.

Gov. John Connally reappointed Harold Hinn and named Roy Furr and Herbert Allen to six year terms on the Texas Tech board. Hinn, Furr, and Allen voiced enthusiasm about guiding Tech's future and serving Panhandle Texas. Allen noted potential cross duties with Rice Institute but said they could be managed.
