Senator Richard B. Russell of Georgia announces a diagnosed lung cancer. Doctors will begin cobalt ray treatment on an outpatient basis while he continues to work, despite being 71 and the Senate dean.
Legislation and student disorder spur tougher rulings. In Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Raymond Choate sent three California State College at Los Angeles students to 30 days in jail for campus vandalism. In Columbus juvenile court two West High School students received seven days detention for a spring vacation sit-in. Suffolk County Judge Edward A. Green Jr. jailed 21 SUNY Stony Brook students for 15 days after downgrading charges to simple trespass. Cambridge officials handed six to weeks in jail for similar protests.
Lynn Riley, 14, Abernathy 4‑H, won the grand champion steer with Brugus weighing 1 004 pounds. Debra Ann Thomas, 14, also of Abernathy, took reserve grand with Popcorn at 1 011 pounds. The three day event resumes with barrow judging at 8 a m and ends with Saturday sale of prize animals.
Lubbock area city council signals continued caution on the garbage baling process as county commissioners approve a bid to demolish the old courthouse and set actions across the county.

President Nixon visits former President Truman in Independence, Missouri, to bury past quarrels. Nixon brings a peace offering piano once used by Truman, destined for the Truman Library. The encounter aims to ease tensions between the two leaders as Nixon heads to a West Coast weekend.
The 27th ABC Rodeo second round at Municipal Coliseum drew a large crowd in Lubbock as world champion cowboys and locals were unseated or rode to the buzzer. Daniel Boone and Fess Parker likenesses thrilled fans while Kathy Crowe, Dolly Beutler and J. W. Stoker dazzled with trick roping and galloping horses.
Texas lawmakers approved a major liquor act to curb underworld involvement in taverns and open records of violations. The measure sets Aug 31 as effective date and was sent to Gov. Smith after Senate amendments. Other actions include hospital district bonds and a higher truck hauling fine.
Mrs. Jack Strong receives Lubbock 1969 Woman of the Year honor at the Altrusa dinner. Since moving to Lubbock in 1946 she has led PTA activities, served in state and local organizations, and supported civic projects with multiple clubs and committees in the community. Carol Haberman of San Antonio spoke at the event.
In 1957 Levelland residents reported a bluish green 200 foot long egg shaped object seen near roads over three nights. Sheriff Weir Clem and others witnessed the brilliant craft stop car engines and lights, then accelerate away at high speed.
Mrs. Stanley Wheeler spoke on The Altrusan in the Community emphasizing the club’s Golden Deeds and the status of women. The remarks appeared on the 1968 See WOMAN Page 8.
