Bombardment heavy at Khe Sanh as 600 North Vietnamese infantry assault the encircled Marine base. South Vietnamese rangers repel the probe, while a 40,000-strong allied drive around Saigon enters its second week with 739 enemy killed and US losses light.
President Johnson totally rejects a Kennedy proposal to remain out of the presidential race. Administration sources say Johnson would pursue changes in Vietnam policy, while Kennedy’s role and timing are disputed in a clash with the Kennedy family and other Democratic figures.
Seven nations in the international gold pool move to deny individuals access to central bank stocks. The London market will reopen April 1 with a $35 ounce price for central bank and IMF transactions, while individuals may still buy newly mined gold. Paris and France may face higher prices if they sell from sizable stocks.
Nine people die when a twin engine plane landing in a crosswind at Rapid City Municipal Airport crashes and bursts into flames. Victims include Ivan Landstrom the pilot, his wife Mary, Rapid City High School cheerleaders Shirley Sandstrom Kay McNutt Jan Glaze Terry Blanton Diana McCluskey and Gail Flohr and English teacher Mrs Dorothy Lloyd the advisor. They were returning from the state basketball tournament in Sioux Falls.

In Gogebic County a 56 year old janitor Eric Pearson was charged with six deaths after a two hour shooting spree across two homes and a tavern in Tronwood Township. A 11 year old girl was wounded. A bar patron struck Pearson with a beer bottle. Pearson awaits arraignment in Bessemer.
Nelya Mikhailova, a Moscow woman in her forties, allegedly moves objects with her gaze from matches to a pendulum under observation. Scientists say no trick was found and offer no supernatural explanation, attributing any effect to unknown physical energy.
Spur Soldier Special Army Spec. 5 Robert H. Walker, 23, of Spur, was killed in action in Vietnam. He previously was reported missing after a March 4 clash. A 1961 Haynes High School graduate, he joined the Army in June 1981. Survivors include his mother Ethel Lee Walker of Spur and four brothers. Services pending arrival of the body.
Thousands of antiwar demonstrators clashed with riot police outside the U S Embassy in London. The confrontation left 80 police injured, 28 seriously, and hundreds of demonstrators wounded or arrested amid smashed windows and debris in Grosvenor Square.
Two American men forced a private Mexican twin engine plane to divert to Cuba, with reports listing five adults and two children aboard at the Cuban landing, and unclear fates for the travelers including the pilot Capt. Raymundo Barrera and a stewardess. The Mexico origin flight carried a Spanish speaking crew and passengers. details on stay in Cuba remain unsettled.
Kent County's Put Off Canyon north of State Hwy 70 between Jayton and Girard earned its name from cattlemen avoiding the rough path three miles northwest of Jayton. The canyon, partly inaccessible on horseback, hosts a water spring and may have been a monkey-faced owl hatching ground, feeding at night, with Croton Creek nearby to the east.
Juan Martinez Martinez, 44, of Plainview died when his car collided with a pickup on FM 2286 east ofPlainview at about 5 20 a m. Rayford Martin 33 of Lockney and Leroy Henison 39 of Plainview were injured and treated at Medical Center Hospital. Martinez born December 27 1923 in Skidmore moved from McAllen last year funeral set at Wilson Funeral Home in McAllen Tuesday.
Dr Keith Marmion 41 head of Texas Tech Civil Engineering died at Methodist Hospital after a three month illness. He joined Tech in 1955 and led the department since 1962. Services set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at St Luke's Methodist Church with burial at Resthaven Memorial Park.
