Navy Lt Cmdr Ralph Gaither who spent about seven years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam describes religious services and limited musical activities for POWs. He writes a poem thanking the Lord for blessings from spring to winter and harvest.
At Clark Air Base Philippines a quiet homecoming welcomed 107 U S servicemen and one civilian freed by North Vietnam after captivity since 1967 and 1968. Among the released were Air Force Maj Philip E Smith and Lt Cmdr Robert J Flynn who traveled to Hong Kong then to Clark where they praised U S leadership and service. Col John P Fivon and Lt Cmdr John S McCain I were noted among the pilots. McCain is the son of the late senator. The group pledged gratitude to the President and the armed forces for support during their long ordeal.
The dollar rose in unofficial European trading as the U S prepares for more international talks. Treasury Secretary Shultz arrived in Bonn from Moscow to discuss policy before meetings with Chancellor Brandt.
