Winter storm halts trains and closes hundreds of schools

Harsh winds and massive snowdrifts sweep the Midwest and Northeast. Up to 20 inches fall in northern New England while Nebraska, Iowa, the Dakotas and Minnesota endure blinding snowfall. A 40-car freight train is trapped near Fort Dodge Iowa. over 100 central Nebraska schools suspend classes as crews battle drifts and stranded travelers. Lubbock Spelling Bee Champion Casey Charness Jr Named

Casey Charness Jr was named Lubbock spelling bee champion as OPAL DINON announced the winner. Local students competed in the city event with the top speller earning the title and recognition.

Casey Charness Jr 12, a seventh grade Hutchinson student, won the Lubbock Public Schools 10th annual Spelling Bee at J P Hutchinson Junior High by spelling polygamous and pompous. Gov Price Daniel arrives today for speeches and a public coffee at Caprock Hotel before a campaign visit and plans to stay overnight. Kathy Hutson placed second after spelling through 81 rounds and missing polygamous in round 11. Both advance to the March 4 county spellings contest. Casey aims for the April 7 spelling bee.

Soviet oppose inspection controls at disarmament talks

In Geneva the Soviet foreign minister Andrei Gromyko rejected any verification or inspection system for a nuclear disarmament treaty. He told British foreign secretary Lord Home the West cannot use verification as a cloak for espionage, dampening hopes for a test ban accord as the 17 nation conference opens. Kennedy Signs Temporary Debt Ceiling Increase Bill

President Kennedy signed a bill raising the national debt limit to 200 billion dollars, a temporary increase through June 30. Three Die in West Texas Highway Crash Near Lubbock

A two-vehicle collision two miles west of Lubbock on U.S. Highway 84 Tuesday night killed three members of a Littlefield family and a Sudanese man. The Hulse family occupants died at the scene and Methodist Hospital. The other driver, Eth Williams, died en route. Missing hitchhiker and child vanish in Amarillo area

A young hitchhiker known only as Carol and the Henderson family's 3-year-old daughter Sharon disappeared Tuesday night near Amarillo. A statewide lookout for the 19 year old and the child was issued with roadblocks set up in the Panhandle and Tucumcari. Authorities described Carol as tired and traveling with a green jacket and a bag, while a motorist reported seeing a car and a small child near US Highway 65 on Amarillo's western edge in late day light. Police in Amarillo and neighboring counties pursued leads after a rider said to have picked up Carol prompted a description broadcast by a station.
