Senate approves Social Security boosts amid debt limit talks
The Senate backed a 10 percent social security increase with a package linking taxes and welfare changes as part of a debt limit bill. The plan raises benefits for most beneficiaries, with lower tiers rising less, and would reset taxes and wage bases starting next year to fund the expansion. A House vote and final agreement were targeted for early next week, while Argentina moved to add terrorism as a capital offense in its penal code.

Turkish coup attempt leads to Demirel resignation in Ankara
Turkish armed forces overthrew the government in a coup, demanding an anti anarchic government. Premier Suleyman Demirel resigned after a military ultimatum as violence flared and four U S airmen were kidnapped by leftist militants.
