Labor chief chided over odd job list omission

Plane crash near Brownwood claims Morton couple

A private pilot found the burned light plane wreckage 10 miles north northeast of Brownwood. The bodies of Max Bowers, Morton farmer and former mayor, and his wife Lora were identified by Sheriff Joe Townsend. The crash occurred after takeoff from Abilene headed to College Station to pick up their son and a cadet friend.

Suharto consolidates power in Indonesia after coup

Formosa Area Quake Kills Two Hurts 11

A 90 second earthquake struck Taipei injuring 11 as two buildings collapsed. About 60 miles east of Formosa Yonaguni Island suffered a deadly quake killing two and destroying at least one house. The quake registered four in Taipei and five on the coast.

Bandit Steals $189 In Bold 19th Street Robbery

A gunman on 19th Street robbed Grenda White, 19, of Lakey's Cleaners, of $189 at a dry cleaning substation in Lubbock Saturday afternoon. Police link the incident to a wave of nine holdups this year and a prior robbery at Golden Horseshoe Theater with $250 to $300 taken.

Cpl William F Elder of Lubbock earns a Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry in South Vietnam on Sept 9. Despite wounds he exposed himself to danger to rescue a wounded scout observer, kept radio operations active, aiding artillery fire that disrupted a Viet Cong attack.
