Admiral Yeager Dies in Fire at Great Lakes Home

Rear Adm. Howard A. Yeager 61, who signaled the D-Day invasion, died in a fire at his Great Lakes Naval Training Center residence. His wife Mary Jean, 60, was critically burned. two Waves, Laura Jean Martin and Lora Mas Garrett, also perished. Fire officials rescued Mrs. Yeager as smoke and burns claimed the others.

Veracruz Quake Strikes Port Causing Injuries and Structural Damage

A strong quake measuring about 5.5 on the Richter scale rocked Veracruz and nearby towns injuring three people. Buildings with old masonry cracked, a balcony collapsed onto a car, and a ten story tower and adjoining structure collapsed. Reports came from Boca del Rio and other communities as tremors spread through the region.

Ninth Sweetwater Rattlesnake Roundup Draws 300 Hunters

More than 300 hunters searched the rocky ranchlands for the ninth annual roundup in Sweetwater as about 1 200 snakes were captured Saturday and 1 700 on Friday. A UT coed Merry Makela was bitten by a rattler and treated, not in serious condition. Registration of 220 hunters paid 3 with $5 000 life insurance and $500 medical insurance. over 3 000 spectators watched from Jaycee sponsored area. Largest snake 65 inches. smallest 12 inches. Prize pays $1 per inch plus trophy for the top entry.

Pilot averts midair collision near Newark Airport

An American Airlines Boeing 707 inbound from Detroit narrowly avoided a collision with a single-engine Cessna near Newark. Eleven passengers and four stewardesses remained uninjured on landing, though one stewardess Marianne Newel, 27, suffered a fractured spine after being jolted during the dive and emergency landing. Octuplets Die in Mexico City Clinic
