Soviet pledge to remove Cuban troops by next Friday questioned

Soviet Ambassador Anatoly Dobrynin said Moscow will honor its promise to withdraw several thousand troops from Cuba by next Friday. Secretary Rusk noted some troops have already left and pledged ships to complete the withdrawal. the issue follows President Kennedy's push to extract long range missiles and bombers first.

Fire at Bellport High injures 45 students and staff

A blaze swept through an old two story wing of Bellport High School in Ellport New York injuring 44 students and a teacher as panicked pupils leaped from windows. Most were treated for smoke inhalation shock and fractures with 13 year old John Allers among the critically injured.

Ais to Cuba Prices Hit 3 Dollars for 100 Aspirin

AP reports from Havana that aspirin costs 3 dollars per 100 tablets amid U S medical shipments for prisoners. Passengers arriving on Pan Am say Havana shelves offer aspirin seltzer tablets menthol rub and vitamins and that American labels remain on the bottles. A 150 vitamin bottle costs 9 to 10 dollars while seltzer tablets go for 10 cents each.

Burglary Suspect Nabbed After Stolen Watch Sale Attempt

A Thursday night burglary case led to one man in custody and two at large after the complainant recognized a suspect trying to sell his stolen watch. Larry Oliver 21 signed a statement admitting entry to Leon Scott’s apartment at Ave B. Police recovered two rifles two pistols two portable TVs a record player a watch and a diamond ring. Scott reported the stolen items after seeing men enter and try to sell his wristwatch. Police pursuing two other suspects Webb and Plunkett remained at large Friday night. Local rebel leaders plead guilty in abortive North Borneo revolt

In Miri Sarawak three rebel leaders admitted involvement in the December uprising and received prison terms up to six years. The defendants pleaded guilty to charges connected with the abortive North Borneo revolt and were sentenced by a regional court.

Earth to Lubbock 50 Mile Hike Ends In Cheerful Finish

Two women completed an 18 hour 50 mile walk from Earth to near Lubbock on the Shallowater Highway. Mrs. Cecil Parish and Mrs. Randy Ward embraced at the finish as Mayor Jack Strong welcomed them. Five started. three fell to illness or exhaustion. the Earth Chamber of Commerce offered 200 dollars to be shared by finishers. Ward later left due to flu but rejoined for the event.

Five Die In Amarillo Car Crash At Western Street

Five persons including two children and a woman were killed when two cars collided near the northwest Amarillo city limits at Western and St Francis. Ray Edward Jackson, 32, of Amarillo, was identified at the hospital. other victims included a man, a woman, a boy about 7 or 8, and a girl about 9 or 10. Witnesses described a high impact crash with bodies thrown from the vehicles and the scene located on opposite sides of Western Street.

Crash Kills Historian Walter Webb in Texas Car Crash

Astin Dr Walter Prescott Webb, 75, famed West historian and former adviser to Lyndon B Johnson, died when his wife’s car overturned on Interstate 35 south of Austin. Mrs Webb, in critical condition, previously widow of Maury Maverick Sr, caused the crash after losing control near the Travis Hays County line. Webb wrote The Great Plains and The Texas Rangers and led the Handbook of Texas project. See DR WEBB Page 10.
