The 50th Legislature advances its slate of bills as dates trigger committee action. In Santa Fe on March 3, a measure to ban closed shops moves to a 15 to 9 vote, reflecting debate over labor taxes and spending.
Senate banking committee members including four Republicans and six Democrats vote to extend sugar controls until March 31, 1948. Price forecasts estimate retail sugar could reach 30 to 40 cents per pound if controls persist. Fort Worth March 8 A strong resolution opposing the Pari-mutuel horse race betting bill before the legislature was sent to the Tarrant county delegation in Austin by the Tarrant County Industrial Union council CIO. The resolution adopted by the council's executive board also condemned the bill's sponsors.
The New Mexico House approved a bill that would double the liquor tax and allocate the extra revenue to the state general fund. The vote tally reported was 31 to an unspecified margin.

Stanolind Pipe Line Co. will build about 24.5 miles of six and sixteen inch pipe from the Petersburg pool south to Sundown and from a Lubbock trunk line to the Irish and Anton fields in Hale, Lamb, and surrounding counties. Contracts expected to be let early this week for nine pump stations tanks and related facilities to handle oil after April 1. Potential flankers and three new field locations are reported in unofficial sources in the Petersburg Irish and Anton regions.
More than 1,200 operators and maintenance personnel voted to accept the Dallas Railway and Terminal Co wage and pension proposals. The agreement includes a 15 cent hourly wage increase and a pension plan offering $40 monthly at age 65 or after 30 years of service.

March 8 died at his home here tonight. Former district judge and noted attorney, Phane Weint Taylor, was reported dead at his residence in Wisville. The man was well known in Texas legal circles. His death ends a long career in public service.
Mark Halsey aged 59 prominent Lubbock druggist and civic leader died while sleeping on a fishing trip to the Devil's River near Del Rio. He was funeral plans for Monday with services in Lubbock. He previously headed the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce and oversaw a major membership drive. Born February 25 1888 in Rogers Texas he built a local drugstore empire beginning with one shop in 1928 now five stores bear his name. He leaves two daughters and three sons, with relatives meeting the body in San Angelo and bringing it to Lubbock.
Margaret Truman, daughter of the president, postpones her planned radio debut as a coloratura soprano after a severe cold. White House physician orders a one week delay, with a new date set for March 16. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra soloist appearance on Sunday Evening Hour is also postponed pending recovery.

The CIO United Auto Workers announces a plan to seek a guaranteed 40 hour week and a 23 percent hourly wage increase for about 225,000 General Motors workers. The union states that any week an employee is called in, they shall receive 40 hours pay. Talks on economic issues can begin after March 19 under the current GM UAW contract.
