American companies in Havana warn Cuba will seize property amid new mining laws. Freeport Nickel announced closure of a $4 million Moa Bay nickel and cobalt project in Oriente Province after talks with Fidel Castro's government failed. The plant would have employed about 2,500 people during construction and operation.
Waggoner Carr, a 12 year Texas political veteran, launches his attorney general bid with a Lubbock rally at the Municipal Coliseum. About 3,500 West Texans and lawmakers expected as reporters from major papers cover the event and the Lions Club serves a barbecue.

Former Flower Grove High School teacher Robert L. Tipton, charged with stealing senior class funds, escaped Sunday night from Arkansas State Hospital in Little Rock on the eve of his extradition hearing. Sheriff Saunders reports law enforcement in Texas and Arkansas are searching. Faubus signed extradition papers. Tipton was arrested in Texarkana on November 28 after vanishing October 30 with 707 dollars intended for the yearbook.
Washington officials trace a stream of lights seen over the eastern United States Monday night to a meteor. Air Force confirms sightings from Lake Erie to Key West and notes pilots and towers reported the event. Roanoke control tower witnessed the meteor break into three pieces.
A coastal low pressure system to the west threatens but Lubbock faces a day of fog and drizzle with scattered showers this afternoon. Temperatures rise from a Monday 3 degree low to highs near 45 to 48 as dense morning fog lifts, with possible thunder in spots.
