President Truman vetoes Congress version of price and rent control extension claiming disaster. Senate and House adjournment delay action, with no temporary extension approved before midnight Sunday. Taft warns revival unlikely if lapse lasts beyond a week.
President Truman urged voters and Congress in a nationwide broadcast to back price and rent controls or risk a lapse at midnight. He warned of disaster if the vetoed OPA extension is not replaced with a workable bill and called for self restraint by business and landlords.
Weather briefings set 10 am target for the hazardous device drop aboard B 29 Dave's Dream near Nevada with a 20 to 30 percent overcast expectation and 12 miles visibility. If winds shift or conditions worsen the drop may be canceled. preparations continue as planes position for the test with observers and reporters aboard.
George Berry of Lubbock was nominated by acclamation for division commander as the Fifth Division of the American Legion in Texas opened its convention in Lubbock. Delegates from the 19th District, including A C Jackson, presided and was named a delegate to the national convention in San Francisco. Page 11 column 1.
British troops seal Palestine with an 18 hour curfew and broad arrests. High Jewish Agency officials detained including Moshe Shertok and Bernard Joseph as raids seize arms and documents. Buildings damaged, casualties reported among Jews and one British soldier.
Braniff announces new flights to connect Lubbock with Amarillo Fort Worth Dallas and Chicago with morning Flight 15 from Amarillo to Dallas and evening return Flight 54 to Denver Pueblo Colorado Springs and Denver. Schedules revise other flights and all become effective July 10.
Homer P. Rainey leads the Texas gubernatorial field in the June Texas Poll with 24 percent support among likely voters. Undecided voters could swing the outcome. if eliminated, Rainey’s share rises to 34 percent, reflecting his being the favorite of more voters than any other candidate.
Heat wave smashes records across Texas with Big Spring at 107 degrees the year’s high. A West Texas dust storm and a dry hail storm followed, hail up to two inches. Midland reached 105 and several cities reported light rain in scattered areas.
A Texas report shows increased revenue stamp sales for cigarettes liquor and wine in June 1946 compared with June 1945. Beer stamp sales fell by 41001.27. State Treasurer Jesse James released the figures.
Counsel for Martin Bormann told the war crimes tribunal that he hoped to prove beyond doubt that Hitler's last deputy was dead but could not due to a lack of witnesses.
The FBI and State's Attorney William J. Tuohy reported identical fingerprints linked to 17 year old William Heirens and a print on the Suzanne Degnan kidnapping note. Tuohy previously said he was satisfied Heirens is the man but not yet guilty beyond reasonable doubt. Heirens remains at Bridewell prison hospital in delirium. his parents and attorney challenge the case.
Winners announced by the American Business club for the Lubbock Boys club benefit rodeo. Lena Klebold of Clovis NM won the sponsor cow girl contest. runners up include Carlynn Cox Midland and Dude Barton Matador. Rodeo prizes awarded after four shows with calf roping led by Slim Whaley Duncan OK and saddle bronc won by Ed Curtis El Reno OK. Marvel Rodgers escaped serious injury when his horse reared during the exhibition.
Reactions in Lubbock to President Truman’s veto of the OPA bill and the end of rent and price controls were mixed. Businessmen warned prices for scarce goods could rise 15 to 25 percent until production rebounds, while some firms pledged to follow the president’s guidance and stay within OPA ceilings.
