Rodino Defends Chairman Amid Impeachment Row

Chairman Peter Rodino hurried to the House to deny he said 21 Democrats on the Judiciary Committee were ready to back Nixon's ouster. Nixon defense lawyer James St. Clair defended Rodino and rejected calls for his dismissal as a White House aide attacked Rodino for alleged abuse of power. Rodino denied a newspaper report of a predecided vote and said committee members would wait for all evidence before ruling. See RODING Page 13.

Nixon and Soviet Agree to Limit ABM Sites at Summit

At the Moscow talks Nixon and the Soviet leader discussed curbing defensive ABM systems and underground nuclear tests. They reached a virtual agreement to forego building more defensive missile sites and to include ABM limits in a broader summit package. The sides also planned cooperation on energy shortages housing and heart disease.

Occidental signs $20 billion Soviet fertilizer deal

Occidental Petroleum signs six contracts with the Soviet Union valued at 20 billion dollars in a 20 year barter deal. The agreement provides up to one million tons per year of superphosphoric acid in exchange for Soviet ammonia and urea by products. Two contracts cover port facility construction and design. The signing occurred during the third Soviet American summit with remarks from Armand Hammer and mentions Nixon and Brezhnev.
